The Indian chemical industry has been among the most competitive industries in India. Posing an impressive growth rate of 11.5% in 2000, it has made immense strides in its growth. It is the 13th largest in the world and the 3rd largest in Asia. The size of the Indian Chemical Industry is approximately Rs. 1400 billion (US$ 28 billion). India accounts for 1.5% of the global chemicals market and Indian trade in chemicals is 1.3% of the total chemical trade worldwide.

The major segments of the chemical industry include chemicals, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, inorganic chemicals, organic chemicals, fine & specialty chemicals, agro chemicals, fertilizers, paints & dyes etc.

Petrochemicals
Petrochemicals are a major category in the Chemicals sector and one of the fastest growing sectors at 13% per annum. The demand for petrochemicals in India is expected to grow at and annual rate of over 10-12%. India already ahs world scale capacities in certain segments of the petrochemicals industry. As new investments, both domestic and foreign flow in, India has the potential of emerging as a global player. With future consumption of polymers expected to grow by 15% and that of fibers and intermediates by 7-8%, petrochemicals sector offers immense opportunity for domestic as well as foreign players.

Pharmaceuticals
The Pharmaceutical Industry in India is one of the largest and most advanced in the developing world. India produces nearly 8.5% of the world''s drug requirements in terms of volume, and ranks amongst the top 15 drug manufacturing countries in the world. India''s US $ 5.0 billion pharmaceutical industry is growing at the rate of 14 percent per year. With major focus on globalization, the pharma companies are gearing-up to face the challenge. There is an increasing focus on R&D by most of the pharma majors. A spate of mergers and acquisitions in this sector is helping the industry to penetrate the global pharmaceuticals market.

Process Plant Machinery
The capital goods industry in the country has progressed a long way since independence. Today, it has the potential to address nearly 85% of the domestic demand for plant and machinery equipment. The chemical industry is a capital-intensive industry and often requires specialized equipment.
